Graduated Drivers License(GDL)
The GDL was originated to ease younger drivers onto the streets with some restrictions that can help reduce the number chances of getting into an accident. The GDL has been adopted by certain states and the restrictions are different from state to state. Statistics have shown that states with stronger GDL restrictions have reduced the number of accidents, injuries and deaths among young drivers. As was mentioned earlier the GDL varies from state to state but restrictions above the minimum are highly encouraged to be enforced by parents.
The first stage of the GDL is while the student is in the permit stage:
- They need to practice driving 50 hours including 10 hours of night driving (this can differ from state to state), the more practice the better
- Having a permit for a certain amount of time before getting a license
The second stage or initial licensing phase can include:
- A curfew or not driving after a designated time
- No distractions
- No driving if the weather or road conditions are too bad
- The number of passengers is limited, especially the number of passengers under the age of 20
The third stage is full licensing when the driver turns 18:
- The restrictions are dropped
Again, please remember the GDL varies from state to state so check your driving manuals and laws.
